Vertical slats with large windows

The use of concrete as sun protection is an architectural strategy that is increasingly applied in modern buildings. This is particularly utilized in regions highly exposed to wind, such as the St. Gallen Rhine Valley or the Principality of Liechtenstein. Through clever design, concrete can not only fulfill a load-bearing function but also contribute to optimizing the indoor climate by effectively deflecting or directing solar radiation.

Vertical or horizontal concrete slats can be designed to prevent direct sunlight while simultaneously allowing daylight into the room. Balconies, canopies, or roof overhangs made of concrete provide natural shade.

Concrete as integral sun protection reduces the need for mechanical air conditioning systems such as air conditioners, which saves energy and is sustainable.

The recently opened Giessen Service Center in Vaduz serves as the best example.
